New chancellor at the reigns

Yesterday, UT regents named Dr. Francisco Cigarroa as sole finalist for chancellor, the top job at UT System, and ultimately our uber-boss. Cigarroa is 51 (are leaders getting younger or am I just getting older?) and was most recently president of the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. He’s a Texan (from Laredo) and transplant surgeon who received his training at Yale, Harvard and Johns Hopkins. The folks I’ve asked are excited about the decision. They think he’ll do a good job, like the fact that he has experience with the issues and opportunities that face an academic health center. He’s been to UTMB several times and I heard him speak once; he seems to be very smart yet approachable and down-to-earth, not unlike another guy we have around here.
