I had to laugh when I saw the latest projections for our current tropical weather threat. The forecast practically blankets the northern hemisphere, with the “cone of probability” arching from Mexico to Florida. Yup, that ought to cover it, it’ll make landfall someplace. All our satellites and our services, the Internet and Weather Channel, the best computer models and forecasting we’ve ever had, tend to give us some sense of misguided comfort—if not control, at least a sense of “knowing.” But the reality is, as my mama has always been fond of saying, Mother Nature is going to do whatever she wants, in spite of our well mapped out plans for her. So in that sense, I welcome the forecasters who say, in utter honesty, “We really just don’t know.” Gustav, you’re not welcome here, but I hope you’re gentle with whomever you do visit.
