The GSBS & The Cell Biology Graduate Program hosted The Fifth Biennial Pomerat Memorial Lecture today, which featured Dr. Thomas D. Pollard from Yale University, who spoke on “Molecular Mechanisms of Cellular Motility and Cytokinesis.” My personal experience with cell biology primarily involved a toy microscope, some pre-mounted slides of stained onion skin, and a few fascinating peeks at fresh blood, usually after a bicycle crash.
But the namesake of today’s lecture was Dr. Charles M. Pomerat (1905-1964). I was curious, so I did a little googling on the UTMB web site, and up popped a great page on this “Renaissance man of biological sciences.” He spent 15 years at UTMB and had a profound impact on the university and ultimately on the entire scientific community. He was one of many giants who have walked UTMB’s hallways. Read about him and see his art.
