Singing the Causeway Blues

Many of us who live “overseas” have had a dose or two of the causeway conniptions these past few days. On Sunday, a special bike ride closed two lanes all morning, and that was compounded by a bad accident later that day. Then, this morning the backup extended to beyond Bayou Vista as late as 9 a.m., the result of two back-to-back accidents during morning drive time.

This afternoon we started getting calls about another closure around 4 p.m., and the Gulf Freeway Cams confirmed something was out of whack, but no one could tell us why until the lanes were open, fortunately in time for the drive home. The culprit? Military surplus.

Inert hand grenade halts island traffic GALVESTON — An inert hand grenade found in the median of Interstate 45 Tuesday afternoon led police to close the freeway for about 90 minutes. Workers planting oleander bushes between the northbound and southbound lanes found the grenade.

I guess now we have another reason to dislike litter.
