Who’s got the best gumbo, really?

I do, of course, but I may be just a little impartial. Few things along the Gulf Coast will “stir” up as much fired-up debate as a question about gumbo, and a few of our Human Resources colleagues are ready to launch a quest to get some empirical data. After all, being able to crow about good local gumbo is certainly a recruitment and retention tool, and I can’t think of a better “benefit.” (Well, at least it’s in the top ten.)

My favorite Galveston Gumbo ever was made at a place called Cafe Torrifie, one of the first resturants on the Strand when I first moved here about 15 years ago. Anybody remember them? Of today’s choices, I like the gumbo at Saltwater Grill and the Cajun Greek on 61st St.. What about you? Send me your favorite places or recipes and maybe we’ll start a new “food” category. I’ll also report back on what the HR folks unearth.
