I’m a believer…

There was a article in the Galveston County Daily News Sunday about breastfeeding. It quoted a number of people, including UTMB faculty members Elizabeth Reifsnider and David Rassin. It examined how breastfeeding  in public makes some people feel very uncomfortable (not the babies, mind you). I’ve got to agree with the folks who suggest we have things a little mixed up. Cosmetic breast augmentation is seen as perfectly OK and cleavage is used to sell everything from shampoo to bottled beer, but using the same hardware for the purpose it was intended is considered obscene or inappropriate by some? That leaves me scratching my head. Some people suggest a woman should breastfeed her infant in a public restroom—I think about how many of us would be willing to munch our ham and cheese sandwiches in the vicinity of a commode. No thanks.

I was there when my kids were born and when they bellied up to the chest buffet. Breastfeeding is tough; it’s hard work and the hours are lousy, especially in the beginning. I think mothers who want to breastfeed, can do it, and are willing to put in the time and effort should be supported and accommodated in every way possible. It’s good for the kids. We should make it as easy as we can for the moms.
