Last night KHOU Channel 11 ran a report by Janice Williamson about a baby named “Miracle” who was just that—a miracle. Even with all our modern knowledge and technology, it’s humbling and inspiring to be reminded that there are still many things beyond what we understand. The news clip tells the story:
She was 11 weeks early. “She’s just a little angel,” Shawndreaka Brinkley said. The story of this newest addition to the Brinkley family actually began 30 miles away, in the back of an ambulance. She was 11 weeks early. “I raised the sheet just in time to catch the baby,” Matagorda County EMS paramedic Rick McKinley said. McKinley delivered the tiny girl and immediately started CPR. It took 30 minutes for the ambulance to get to the emergency room at UTMB in Galveston, and then a neonatal team took over efforts to save the newborn. “We did probably another 30 minutes or so of CPR,” UTMB Dr. Snehal Doshi said. “At that point she still did not respond.” The medical team made a tough decision. “We felt anymore measures would have hurt the baby,” Dr. Doshi said. The preemie was left on a warming bed to pass away. The family thought she was already dead. Forty-five minutes later a nurse noticed the baby girl was breathing. “Well I could probably give you all kinds of scientific reasons about why she came back,” neonatologist Dr. Joan Richardson said. “I just prefer to think it is a miracle.” See video and photo on the KHOU web site…
