Painful Holy Waiting

His beloved wife is wasting away,
taken down into lonely dark depths
by the devastation called dementia.
Four years ago she had been
as clear minded and physically active
as any eighty year old I know.
Then the decline began,
hardly noticeable at first
but steadily, dreadfully downward.
The pain her husband bravely bore,
trying to hold up for her,
was taking a toll on him as well.
I asked him one day how he was doing,
and with choked voice and tear filled eyes
he answered almost in a whisper:
“I’ve asked my Lord
for faith-filled patience
amid seemingly unanswered prayers.”
