National Library of Medicine (NLM)
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world’s premier biomedical library. A division of the NIH, NLM has been instrumental in providing health science researchers and clinicians with medical literature searching services, both printed and computer-based. Probably the best-known product of the NLM is the MEDLINE journal literature search service, which has been in existence in various forms since the late 1960’s, most recently as PubMed. Medline has now become a biomedical bibliographic utility of such ubiquity and quality as to be considered indispensable in guiding research or clinical practice.
NLM also incorporates the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), which has created numerous powerful and useful information services in genetics, structural biology, molecular biology and related disciplines.
In an effort to provide the public with reliable health information, NLM has fielded MEDLINEplus, an information service in which patients and families can locate thoroughly vetted materials on a great variety of particular conditions. Numerous interactive tutorials explain surgical procedures or disease processes. Spanish language versions are available for many items in MEDLINEplus.
PubMedCentral (PMC)is an online archiving service, offering free accees to the electronic versions of numerous research and clinical journals to anyone, anywhere via the web. PMC is also the designated repository for copies of articles funded by NIH awards, as outlined in the Institute’s policy, effective May 2, 2005.
