Members of UTMB's clinical leadership team tour Victory Lakes

Just before the holidays, members of UTMB’s clinical leadership team had an opportunity to tour the Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, where work is focusing on finishing out the interiors and installing equipment. Progress at the site was a beautiful and welcome early Christmas gift. On the tour and in the photo are, from left: Bonnie Benkula (associate VP for ambulatory care and administrator at Victory Lakes), Dr. Steve Quach (chief medical officer), Diana Browning (VP for ambulatory operations), and Donna Sollenberger (EVP & CEO for the UTMB Health System).

On behalf of the Health System and everyone at UTMB, Happy Holidays and best wishes for a great 2010!

An intro to orthopaedic services at Victory Lakes

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

UTMB’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation is positioned to meet the orthopaedic needs of southeast Texas and the Gulf South region with clinics on both sides of Galveston Bay! In March of 2010, patients and their families can breeze into our new facility at Victory Lakes (I-45, Exit 20) for orthopaedic clinic visits and day surgery procedures.

Patient care solutions include non-operative management, as well as surgical intervention when appropriate, to treat musculoskeletal injuries and diseases ranging from pulled muscles to broken bones to traumatic injuries to worn-out joints. (more…)

Victory Lakes: A first look at services

Friday, December 18th, 2009

While there’s been a lot of visible work taking place on the structure that will house the Specialty Care Center, there’s been just as much feverish activity taking place behind the scenes, gauging community needs, shaping the services and assembling the equipment and teams that will provide care in the facility. Up until now, those services have been described in very broad terms. One of our goals with this blog is to provide a little more insight into the types of care that will be offered and how the multidisciplinary approach at Victory Lakes will really benefit patients. We’re not just working to provide great care; we’re working to revolutionize how care is provided. That’s a tall order, but we’re well on the way to making  a reality. See an example of how with an initial post on the Breast Health Center.

A “good picture” of what’s behind Breast Health Center

Mammography saves livesWhile the Breast Health Center at Victory Lakes will be about more than breast cancer, cancer is still a major concern, with close to 200,000 new cases discovered annually in the U.S. Even with today’s advanced screening methods, those diagnosed with cancer often wait an agonizing and unnecessary period between screening, diagnosis and ultimate treatment. Most screening centers don’t have the technology or expertise to provide more in-depth studies of the breast when they are warranted, causing patients to spend precious time and energy shuttling around for more tests and ultimate care. At Victory Lakes, however, top-notch physicians—including board-certified, breast imaging specialists and surgeons—will employ the latest, most sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic technology all under one roof, leading to quicker, more efficient and convenient care. The tools they will have available include:

• Digital mammography
• MRI
• Diagnostic ultrasound
• MRI-guided biopsy
• Ultrasound biopsy
• Stereotactic biopsy

Victory Lakes will feature an on-site 3 Tesla MRI machine to provide state-of-the-art image resolution, leading-edge technology typically found only at the nation’s top university and research medical centers, and the only 3 Telsa machine in the county.

We’ve come a long way

Below is a relatively recent shot of the entrance to the new Victory Lakes Specialty Care Center, taken in November ’09 by Public Affair’s Raymond Brouillard.

As great as this snapshot is, it gets even better, when taken in light of the photo below, taken of the same site in November of 2008, just about 12 months earlier. We’ve come a long way, baby.

Chance to meet and greet

Monday, December 14th, 2009

One goal for Victory Lakes has always been to have the facility and its people be vibrant, engaged partners with the community. To help make that happen, Bonnie Benkula (who was recently hired by UTMB to run Victory Lakes) and Chris Packard (community liaison and marketing) had a “meet & greet” with the mayor, the chief economic development officer, and representatives fom the Chamber of Commerce for League City. That same evening they attended the holiday reception for BAHEP (Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership). There’s a lot of enthusiasm around this project, and our UTMB reps had a chance to connect with many great people.
