Pep Valdes
Director of Internal and Internet Communication

Eduardo “Pep” Valdes has a goal: to help make UTMB the very best place to work, study or get care. He works in the Office of University Advancement, which divides its effort into two primary areas: garnering philanthropic support for the university, and communication. The communication charge falls to him and colleagues in the Public Affairs division. In addition to managing several university web sites and communication venues including iUTMB and the daily announcements, he and his colleagues provide planning and hands-on support for a variety of employee-focused initiatives. Pep moved to Galveston from the west coast of Florida, where he earned an English degree at the University of South Florida. He’s been at UTMB 14 years, hired initially as the university newsletter editor. As the Internet began to explode on the communications scene during the late 1990s, Pep was given the opportunity to focus his efforts on UTMB’s web identity and presence. In 2001, the role began to shift toward internal and employee-focused communication, often using tools such as the web and other emerging media.

In addition to his role supporting and advising the UTMB EAC, he currently serves on the UT System Employee Advisory Council, and has been the group’s vice chair. He lives in League City with his wife, a scientist at UTMB, and two UTMB-born BOI kids.
